A Guide to Bird Watching, by Joseph J. Hickey: Amazon.com
We are trying to iteratively shape this September trip to be a good balance of BOTH the exciting modern "Field Card School of Ornithology" (as Hickey called it) AND a more ecosystems view of all the life and environmental factors in the waters around Cape Cod (Hickey had an ecosystems view of Nature, although he did not call it exactly that). I had the very good fortune to know Joe Hickey years ago (starting in the late 1950s when he was at the University of Wisconsin.. www.wchf.org/inductees/hickey.pdf ). He was not just an astute scientist, but also a very kind man, and a generous mentor to young birders. These trips are dedicated to the memory of five old birding friends: Joe Hickey, Tom Davis, John Bull, Joe Bondi and Elliot Hirshberg. I wish so much that they were here to join us on our next offshore adventure.
