Two Trips: Sept.22-23 and Oct.22

Our last organized pelagic trip of the 2018 year (Oct.7-8, 2018) got its target: 2 Great Skuas in mid-Gulf Of Maine

What are "Seabirds" ?

DRAFT.... this section under construction...

"Seabirds are defined here as those species whose normal habitat and food source is the sea, whether that be coastal, offshore or pelagic." This simple definition comes from Peter Harrison's excellent 1983 book, "Seabirds: An Identification Guide". This book covers 312 species, but we will start with only those species which could be expected (or hoped for!) around Cape Cod, MA, USA.

Seabird - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here is our first draft of the list of "Atlantic species" of seabirds which might be seen around Cape Cod (and the East Coast of North America).  Green color indicates species seen around the Cape Cod area (including all nearby waters, 100miles out to the canyons at the edge of the continental shelf) EVERY YEAR in the last ten years, whereas purple color indicates species seen less than every year (and usually much farther out, on the edge of the continental shelf), and orange color indicates species never seen in this area thus far (but most of these species have been seen off Cape Hatteras or somewhat further south). Although our trip has near-zero probability of seeing any purple or orange colored species below, they were included to provide context, and as a reminder to keep our eyes open for some extraordinary species.
