This weekend's Aug 23-24, 2014 BBC (36hour) pelagic trip to Hydrographer Canyon PROVED that many excellent "wildcard" seabird species ARE around right now, so lets cross-our-fingers and go out on our 8hour near-shore pelagic trip on September 7th, drip out some fish oil, and see if we cant attract a few of those "wildcards".
This very rich list of species seen (on the 36hour trip) included 1 White-faced Storm Petrel, 3 Black-capped Petrel, 1 Red-billed tropicbird, 20 Audubon's Shearwaters, Band-rumped Storm-petrels, Leach's Storm-petrels, South Polar Skua, 3 jaeger species, both marine phalaropes, and the commoner shearwaters (you may have seen all these species over the years, but probably not on any ONE trip!).

Hydrographer Canyon is 100miles SSE of Hyannis MA, along the edge of the NE continental shelf, and probably too far out to EXPECT any of the warm-water wildcards to come in to our near-shore (8hour) pelagic trip on 9/7. The birds are around, however, at the edge of our NE continental shelf, so lets go out and see what "returns" our 8hour investment of time (and chumming) might yield on 9/7. Remember, this is the year that Fea's Petrel and Yellow-nosed Albatross were seen within just a few miles off Cape Cod and Gloucester respectively! Plus, Hudson Canyon (approx 80miles south of Montauk) had great birds on Aug 11-12 (you can see details of that trip several posts below here). So this is a year that anything is possible!
If you do decide to join the 9/7 pelagic trip, see the instructions in the post above...
