Two Trips: Sept.22-23 and Oct.22


Our last organized pelagic trip of the 2018 year (Oct.7-8, 2018) got its target: 2 Great Skuas in mid-Gulf Of Maine

RESULTS  of our Oct.7-8 trip:       Working DRAFT as of Oct.21, 2018.

SUMMARY:
Yes, we got Great Skuas again, several years in a row on this ferry route.
We had the satisfaction of digging-them-out under difficult circumstances.
List(s), photos, eBird links, and other details coming in next few days, etc.
Bad weather delayed our Sept.22-23 GOM skua trip to Oct.6-7 and more bad weather then delayed that weekend trip one more day, until Oct.7-8 Sunday-Monday, causing most of our birders to drop-out, but the smaller remaining team of 3 still had a successful trip, on the last ferry runs of 2018 on that route (and perhaps the last ferry runs on that long 212-mile route forever, since its US port will probably change in 2019 from Portland to BarHarbor).

Alex did a great job with 15-minute interval eBird recordings, such as the following three eBird checklists, which are the relevant ones for the three stercorarridae of interest (skuas #1, #2 and #3 below).

THREE SKUAS OF INTEREST:
We saw three possible skuas (most of their photos were taken at great distance, although each bird was initially seen closer to the ship with binoculars, before they flew away), the first one of which ("skua #1") was most likely a dark morph Pomarine Jaeger, POJA. Note that 100% certain ID is not common with many skuas in the field, for multiple reasons (including the remote possibility of Stercorarius antarcticus  eBird Checklist – Tucker's Town, Bermuda, BM – Sun Apr 27, 2003 ), but the ID of the following three birds is very probably correct.

The white pattern in upper primaries (in yellow circle) is more  dark-morph-Pomarine-like than skua-like.
Scroll way down to see several typical dark Pomarine Jaeger photos.
And the bird's entire dorsal surface in this photo is uniformly dark, almost black, a la Pom.
But note this similar-looking very dark skua from Sweden 2018 October 23, accepted as a Great Skua...

Note that our photos of these several October-molting skuas/jaegers strongly suggests the birds to be northern-hemisphere-breeding birds, because of molt timing, either Great Skuas or Pomarine Jaegers:

Any skua molting in October is very likely to be a Great Skua, an adult Great Skua just a few months off its Northern European breeding grounds.

Our actual 212-mile 6-hour route from Yarmouth, NS to Portland, ME on 2018-10-08...
Post script:  On Oct.16th the town of Bar Harbor ME voted in favor of the CAT ferry using its terminal, which will probably replace the Portland terminal next year, in 2019...

Bar Harbor council vote confirms what we pretty much knew: The Cat isn't coming back to Portland - Portland Press Herald.
It seems that next year this route will become BarHarbor to Yarmouth, and replace this much longer Portland to Yarmouth route!  In which case these were the last two days of this long route!! So the GOM crossing distance will get shorter, about two hours shorter, while the drive up to BarHarbor will get longer, at least 3 hours longer!

An analysis of the birds seen every fifteen minutes (about every ten miles) on both Oct.7 and 8 will be compiled and available here in another few weeks.

POMARINE JAEGERS - DARK MORPHS:

Regarding dark morph Pomarine Jaegers, they usually have a distinctive look, especially in the primaries upper surface, where the white lines all often seem separate and distinct, with little or no coalescing of the white. Will show a few photos of that here, but meanwhile google:  pomarine jaeger dark morph and go to Images.

Here is a photo I took off Monterey CA on Sept.11, 2014..... quite a different look than a large skua... especially compared with the primaries in the skua photo above...

October 6-7 is the new/replacement date for this trip.

Our goal is to PHOTOGRAPH as many skuas along this long 420-mile round trip as possible (with the best possible photos), to increase our knowledge about those species in this GOM area (including locations, species, age, molt, behavior, etc.), and to SURVEY the locations and numbers of all seabirds and whatever other lifeforms we can see along this 210 mile transect.

The time and location of this trip is designed to target skuas, primarily Great Skuas. We get small numbers of several other seabirds, but this is mainly a skua trip, and a great excuse to haul a long route across the wide Gulf Of Maine, even in some wild weather (this is a large super stable ship and only the most extreme weather stops its runs).

In full disclosure, this is a public ferry ride across 210 miles (each way, on our round trip) of the GOM where skuas could be anywhere, and often are. The fun for this trip is trying to spot/ID/photograph them (and other good seabirds) as we pass through this long corridor, and scan hundreds of square miles of usually windy water. Its an acquired taste, and some people may not enjoy this form of birding. Fortunately some of the birds seem to parallel the ship fairly closely, and we benefit by that, but generally some birds are not that close to the ship, so seabird ID skills are at a premium (and so are BIF birds-in-flight photography skills, and this is a challenging environment to practice and sharpen those skills).

Last year on this trip we had (at least) 3 out of the following 5 species, as we crossed the Gulf Of Maine 212 miles each way (a few Antarctic/Brown Skuas have been recorded in the North Atlantic, but there is no way currently to ID that species confidently in the field, imho, without DNA analysis or the bird in the hand)...

Here is our target species, two Great Skuas (Stercorarius skua), photographed by Michael J. Good on Sept.12, 2015 in the Gulf of Maine. Note the left bird showing the dark cap, the protruding head and neck, the broad wings and bulky body, the short wide tail, the warm coloration, the large amount of white in the wing-flash, the molting wing, including perhaps a slightly short P10 growing in, plus a hint of the golden markings on the back of the right bird.... very similar to one of the skuas we saw in 2017 in mid-GOM...

Note the unusual timing of this 24-hour round trip:
-- We depart Portland ME in early afternoon 9/22, for a six-hour GOM crossing.
-- We sleep in a good hotel in Yarmouth overnight.
-- We depart Yarmouth NS in early morning 9/23 returning to Portland ME around 1pm.


Our trip, Portland - Yarmouth, is perhaps the longest ferry route in North America. Note how it dwarfs the arm of Cape Cod in the lower left, and how exposed it is to the open ocean, which is good for our trip, since Great Skuas are often far offshore, usually in the middle of this route, at the farthest offshore points ...


A basic question is what birds and other lifeforms are in these waters? And we are lucky that there is a long ferry route giving us access to these otherwise remote waters, so we can go out and see what is there.

2018 October 20 CAS LIS Trip

This October 20th trip was also the 2018 Annual Meeting of the CAS, the Connecticut Audubon Society (CT Audubon Staff and Board), whose staff includes Executive Director, Patrick Comins, Director of EcoTravel, Andrew Griswold and Sr.Director of Science & Conservation, Milan Bull - all onboard to lead this trip (along with multiple CAS Board Executives, such as Kathy VanDerAue, Chair).


What a beautiful afternoon to be out on the east end of Long Island Sound. Here is a panoramic photo of the top deck (from the right rear corner) of this 3-deck Cecelia Ann catamaran.  You can click to enlarge most of these images, and then press ESC key to return...




The trip began as we left port in New London CT at 3:37pm and it lasted 2hr 57minutes, covering 52miles. Max speed was 35.9mph.   SST water temp in Fisher's Island Sound was 59.5F. Air temp was about 60F.

Wicopesset Island is a small island just NE of Fisher's Island East Point. Here is the left (NE) side of Wicopesset Island, with cormorants and gulls on and near it, and possibly a raft of eiders, photographed at great distance with the equivalent of 1200mm. This was the greatest concentration of birds we saw during this trip.  Herring and Gr.Black-backed Gulls were also flying around over the waves about 1/4 mile left of this island, where even more were resting...

We were not doing any rigorous birding, but we (M.Bull, P.Comins, T.Green, A.Griswold, D.Jernigan, T.Robben, K.VanDerAue, S.Zagorski, et al) did see the following species during the trip:

Common Eider.
White-winged Scoter.
Double-crested Cormorant.
Great Cormorant.
Herring Gull.
Great Black-backed Gull.
Laughing Gull.

A timeline of some significant seabird and seabirding events (including "pelagic trips") will be assembled and built-up here, iteratively, in the context of a larger history of ornithology, taxonomy, systematics and biology (e.g., the continual restructuring of the "kingdoms" of all living things). Two of the threads which will be developed and traced are the  history of Skuas and the history of ocean microbiology (viruses, bacteria, archaea, and what we used to call protists), where skuas are at the top of the ocean trophic pyramid, and the microbes (i.e., the smallest plankton, including autotrophic phytoplankton) are at the bottom...

What year?  First records/recognition of South Polar Skua in the North Atlantic.  We have the data, and will fill in here. Retroactive recognition: how far back can we re-classify some "Skua" reports to actually be maccormicki?


2016.  W.F.Martin identified the protein clusters of the LUCA Last Universal Common Ancestor , which may have inhabited an anaerobic hydrothermal vent, i.e., in the ocean.
2002.  Pelagibacter ubique discovered/isolated in the ocean. The most abundant organism.
1993.  Chromista broken out as an additional kingdom of living things.
1986.  Prochlorococcus found in high abundance in the ocean.

1952.  Hagen collects and names Stercorrarius antarctica hamiltoni, Tristan Skua.

1950s:  what happened regarding seabirding during this decade? How were seabirds being researched by scientists and birders:  by seawatches, from fishing trips, from naval ships, from cruise ships, from ferries, from whale-watching trips, by govt/academic research surveys, by museum expeditions, by "pelagic trips" dedicated to bird watching, etc? Which organizations and individual were doing any of these? Where are those records/reports? 
Was Griscom or Murphy or Petersen researching seabirds during these years, or leading any ocean trips?
Were any bird clubs running pelagic trips?
What seabird research and pelagic trips were happening around Massachusetts, New York, Long Island Sound, NJ, DelMarVa, NC and south to Florida?
What was happening in the US west coast, in Alaska?
What was happening in the UK, Europe and elsewhere?

1949.  Ralph Palmer's "Maine Birds" says no GRSK reported in GOM (as of 1949!), where GOM was defined as including waters north of the line between Chatham MA and Cape Sable Island NS....

1947:  "Field Guide to the Birds", edition 2.5, by R.T. Petersen. Note seabirds plate 2 "Oceanic Birds" and one Skua species only, called "Skua (Northern)", and the species description (SKUA. Catharacta skua skua) on page 109 by guest author R.C.Murphy.

1940s:  World War II and submarines, which impacted ocean travel.
AND SAME QUESTIONS AS FOR 1950s.

1930s - 1940s:  Scott Weidensaul on page 245 says, "Pelagic birding began slowly on the East Coast, with Murphy, Petersen, and Ludlow Griscom leading trips off New York and Massachusetts in the 1930s and 1940s, and others using existing ferry services across Long Island Sound or the Chesapeake Bay to search for inshore birds." Can we find references to back that up and detail it?

1938.  Bacteria (and blue-green algae) broken out as a fourth kingdom of living things.

1936. "Oceanic Birds of South America", by Robert Cushman Murphy. The American Museum of Natural History, NY.  Another classic.

1928. "Birds of the Ocean" field guide, by W.B.Alexander. Followed by 1954 and 1963 editions.

1912.  Gregory Matthews collects and names Stercorrius antarctica lonnbergi, Subantarctic Skua.

1866.  Protists recognized as a third kingdom of living things.

1859.  "The Origin of Species"  published by Charles Darwin on evolution.

1857.  Bonaparte collects and names Catharacta chilensis, Chilean Skua. Catharacta chilensis (Chilean Skua).

1841 January 12.  Robert McCormick shoots and collects a skua in Antarctica. In 1893 that specimen was named by Howard Saunders to be  Stercorarius/Catharacta maccormicki, MacCormick's Skua, later renamed to South Polar Skua.  Catharacta maccormicki (South Polar Skua). Has the most southern range of any flying bird.  Note that the large skuas started as genus Catharacta but are now generally considered part of genus Stercorarius, along with the three arctic-nesting jaegers.

1831. Lesson collects and names Catharacta antarctica, Brown Skua.  Catharacta antarctica (Brown Skua). Apparently has 3 subspecies: antarcticus (Lesson, 1831) of the Falkland Islands and southern Argentina, lonnbergi (Matthews, 1912) of the Antarctic to New Zealand, hamiltoni (Hagen, 1952) of TristanDaCunha and Gough Islands.

1824.  MacGillivray collects and names Rhodostethia rosea, Ross's Gull.  Rhodostethia rosea (Ross's Gull).

1819.  Sabine collects and names Xema sabini, Sabine's Gull.  Xema sabini (Sabine's Gull)

Two thousand years of biology dominated by the ideas of the Great chain of being

This was the Scala Naturae: aka The Scale of Being, aka the Great chain of being .   scalanaturae.qxd.  Scala Naturae - Aristotle the Biologist .  It had a powerful influence on zoology for some two thousand years.

2018 September 30 Pelagic Trip

BASICS:   Sept.30 from Gloucester MA, USA from 7am to 1pm. Winds NNW10-15, 55-60F air temp, 20% thin clouds.  3foot seas, 15 seconds interval.

eBird Checklist – Jeffrey's Ledge (Massachusetts), Essex County, Massachusetts, US – Sun Sep 30, 2018 – 18 species (+3 other taxa).  Highlights included:  five Northern Fulmars, at least one Pomarine Jaeger, 1 jaeger sp., and a Connecticut/Mourning Warbler that flew close to the boat on several occasions (observed by many of the trip participants), 35 Cory's Shearwater, 10 Great Shearwater, 200 Northern Gannet, 11 Laughing Gull, 2 Common Loon, and zero terns.

WHALES, ETC:  Approximately ten Humpback Whales, a Gray Seal, Harbor Porpoises, Atlantic White-sided Dolphins (a small pod), and Common Dolphins (a large pod, about 40, and a highlight of the trip).

PLANKTON:  5-minute plankton tow was successful, including lots of rock weed...

FISH, ETC:  we did 17minutes underwater video, trolling the GoPro camera several feet below the waves (it's image clarity improved after the first five minutes, which had a lot of air bubbles, probably because we were going faster, pulling the camera higher, up to the surface). Play it loud - the sounds are interesting (although the camera is almost 50 feet behind the boat, isolated inside a protective housing, on a 300# monofilament line, you can still hear the engines and propeller screws clearly -- imagine how fish and whales must hear these sounds with their acute hearing).  The nearby dolphins did not show up on the video (although they apparently inspected and bumped the camera at 4:00 thru 4:30 minutes on the video), but lots of tiny fish did appear on the video.  The following photo (one frame grabbed from the video) shows lots of small fish too close to the camera to focus on, two feet under the surface, 8 knots.  This video addresses the questions: What will we see, if anything, in the ocean waters off New England, just under the surface? Will we see fish of any size? Will we see plankton? Will we see anything else?? A frame-by-frame review (of all 28,000 frames) revealed some interesting small things, and will be documented here next week, in the paragraphs below. Here is one of those frames, with the sunlit waves a few feet above and hardly any air bubbles visible anywhere, where the camera was apparently towed through a school of very small fish which were too close to the camera to be focused on, and where the speed of the ship elongated them into blurry streaks (next time we should go more slowly, less than 5 knots, maybe 2 knots).   Click on this photo to enlarge it, then press ESC key to return....

Note the probable fish larvae (each a few millimeters long, in the yellow oval) and fish juveniles (less than one inch long, in the red ovals) in the following image from the 17-minute video (click on this image to enlarge it, and then press ESC key to return). Those white marks are not air bubbles. They are blurry because of the velocity of the ship, and some may be too close for the camera to focus on...

The full 17-minute video can be seen on YouTube here:  will video camera just under ocean surface show anything? - YouTube   This video was taken at a place called “the outer flag”, in New Hampshire waters, on the northern side of Jeffrey’s ledge. 

Our interpretation of this video will be drafted here in the following paragraph:
During the first few minutes the camera was towed at higher speed, causing it to be closer to the surface, resulting in more air bubbles on the recording (and you can study what air bubbles look like during these first minutes, to differentiate them from small fish later in the recording). There were numerous dolphins in the area, and at around 4minutes into the recording one dolphin apparently came up under the camera and bumped it, for about 30 seconds. At several points during this full video there appear to be groups and chains of salps, some rockweed, some long thin fish/worms, and some balls/schools of very small fish (less than one inch). We dont think there are any larger fish distinguishable in these 28,000 frames, but would be happy to be proven wrong!  Remember that the ship just passed through this stretch of water we are photographing, and larger fish may have fled away from this newly disturbed area of water in the wake of the 100-foot ship.

Ichthyologist K.Hartel's comments on this: "The hake we caught at about 25-30mm TL [total length] is fully developed as far as the swimming fins go.  So at that size they are capable of schooling and doing it near the surface.  In fact many families of fishes develop from eggs to juveniles near the surface regardless of how deep the adults live.  The eggs and small larvae essentially become part of the plankton." These expert comments support our theory that our video camera caught several schools of larval fish, with TL of 1 inch or less, much less.

EQUIPMENT FOR UNDERWATER VIDEO RECORDING:
A GoPro Hero camera was deployed in a TrollPro housing (thanks to David Wessner at www.trollpro.com), towed on a rig with 300-lb monofilament line (thanks to Capt. Kyle Douton at J&B Tackle, Niantic CT), about 45feet behind the ship, which towed it at 5-10knots. The ship was captained by Jay Frontierro (www.7seaswhalewatch.com). Video recording was at 1080p30.  Here is that rig being retrieved by Prof. Adrian Jordaan and yours truly, including its long thin 32oz trolling weight to keep it pulled down, preventing it from floating up along the surface while being towed...

  • # 1) WHICH are the significant fish etc. ("etc" = & other marine life) in LIS and nearby waters?
  • # 2) Which birds EAT which of these fish etc? Which fish are not prey to birds?
  • # 3) WHEN are these fish etc. here in LIS and nearby waters? Many fish are migratory & cyclical. 
  • # 4) Which of these fish etc. have actually been reported in RECENT weeks? How seen? By who?
  • # 5) WHO is knowledgeable about these fish matters, and will they collaborate with us?

From a bird watcher's point of view :
Why do seabirds (and whales) concentrate in some waters, and what are they eating there???

Since fish (and plankton, etc) are such essential food items in the diet of most seabirds, it is important that we understand them better, including their 1) seasonal changes and 2) long term trends. The changes in fish numbers, distributions and health have a large impact on the success and survival of many seabirds (and where seabirds tend to congregate). Seabirds often search for fish (and plankton) concentrations, and we should know which fish species they are eating.

MAIN QUESTION (related to #4 above):  Can we find or produce a quarterly or monthly report on the currently changing fish patterns (fish species, ages,  numbers, distributions) in nearby waters, such as LIS Long Island Sound, Montauk and Long Island South Shore, Stellwagen Bank, The Gulf of Maine, Georges Bank, Scotian Shelf, Grand Banks, etc?

To do this, somebody has to be able to answer this simple underlying question: Which fish species are ACTUALLY in the water now, right in front of us, as we stand on a ship?

How do we know which fish are "out-there" from month to month, and how they are changing, e.g., migrating? Who knows that? Who is "watching" these fish changes in-the-field, from month to month? Who are these "fish watchers"? How are they "watching"? What are all the methods being used to monitor fish populations, both formal/scientific and informal/nonstandardized?


And secondarily, can we note any relationships being observed with birds (such as flocks of terns, gulls, shearwaters, gannets, cormorants, loons, ospreys, alcids, etc.) feeding on these fish?

Because of our emphasis on "seabirds" we are mostly focusing on salt water fish, with more attention to pelagic species and less on ground fish. Which raises an incidental question about scientific fish surveys: are most of them trawl surveys, focusing more on ground fish than pelagic fish??

We will try to work through this main question at this post, starting with fishing reports, such as:

We will include inputs from fish experts from many areas, including commercial fishing, recreational fishing, academic, governmental, tackle shops, museum collection curators, etc. This new project is already receiving useful information from many subject matter experts and project partners. These two groups include P.Auster, M.Bull, P.Comins, I.Devlin, K.Douton, J.DiCostanzo, K.Hartel, D.Hudson, A.Jordaan, L.Kaufman, B.Lucey, M.Male, K.O'Brien, M.Sedotti, D.Wessner, C.Witek, C.Wood, etc etc.

Tackle shops could be another key source of valuable information, e.g., J&B Tackle Co  in Niantic, with outstanding store manager Capt.  Kyle Douton.



EXAMPLES:
Here are two interesting samples from the CT DEEP Weekly Fishing Report on Sept.20th. Is this the best contemporaneous fish information we have for LIS, from week to week?   These small tuna species were not reported in LIS earlier in the summer, so you can deduce the changing patterns of fish to some extent from studying these qualitative weekly fishing reports...

"ATLANTIC BONITO & LITTLE TUNNY. Just got back from a great morning of fishing today (Sept 20th). They are here feeding on the crab hatch and forage fish. They are fast movers and moving to different locations is important. However, the action in CT is heating up and many fish have moved into the western Sound. Big catches of these small tunas have been reported from Griswold Point. Pleasure Beach, Pine Island, Bluff Point, Groton Long Point to Norwalk/Darien. Shore anglers are scoring at Pleasure Beach, Ocean Beach, Seaside, Harkness Memorial and Rocky Neck State Park. These small tunas are also cruising around from Pt. Judith, Watch Hill to Bluff Point (including Fishers Island Sound), the Race to Little Gull Island, from Bartlett Reef to Black Point. Dawn and dusk is the best time to fish for these inshore tunas. They are also feeding heavily on young of the year transparent anchovy. Try casting metal (heavy) lures (Swedish pimple and Epoxy jigs) to feeding fish on the surface. A jig with a plastic swimming bait (sluggos, fin-s-fish, super flukes) and no weight on the leader has been very productive. A quiet approach and finding birds (gulls/terns) actively feeding is the key to a successful trip. Jigging for them also works when they are close to the bottom."

"BLUEFISH fishing has improved a little. They can be found in good numbers the eastern sound (find the birds). More recently good numbers of bluefish can be found in the lower estuaries, rivers and beaches feeding on menhaden/anchovies. The “Top-water” bite continues to be very good, look for the “blow-ups”. Bluefish fishing spots include the reefs off Watch Hill, the Race, Thames River, Sluiceway, Plum Gut, Pigeon Rip, lower Connecticut River, Long Sand Shoal, Sixmile Reef, Falkner Island area, New Haven Harbor and upper reaches, lower Housatonic River, buoys 18 and 20 off Stratford Point, Stratford Shoal/Middleground, Penfield Reef, and Cable and Anchor Reef.  SNAPPER fishing has improved in the tidal creeks and rivers with fish measuring 6 to 10 inches in length."

Other "fish" mentioned by LIS fishermen in their August reports included:
Fluke, black sea bass, porgy(scup), mullets, bluefish (and snappers), menhaden/bunker, striped sea robin, northern kingfish, sand shark, humpback, blackfish (tautog), spearing, weakfish, eels, hickory shad, blue crab, Jimmies.


Of course mention of these fish species (Atlantic Bonito, Little Tunny, Bluefish, Menhaden, Anchovies -- all of various age classes and sizes) makes us wonder which bird species may eat them, and how important they may be to those birds.  We will focus on this.



RELATED QUESTIONS:
From a birding and ornithological point of view we cant fully understand the birds and seabirds of a particular body of water such as GOM (Gulf of Maine) or LIS (Long Island Sound) unless we also understand the fish and other lifeforms on which they depend for food and survival. This leads to a series of questions we need to address:

1)  What are the predominant 20 or 50 fish species in, for example, the LIS? Both pelagic and ground fish.

2)  Are the numbers of these species trending in any long term directions?

3)  How do the numbers of these species change seasonally through a typical year? What are the explanations?  A great example for this, for California waters, is this site:  Seasons in the Sea - Home Page

4)  What about this particular year? How have these numbers been changing the last month, or week? Which species have been seen very recently, where, by who, identified how (in hand, photographically at a distance, etc)? And have there been any noteworthy events, such as schools of one species blitzing schools of another fish species?

Basically this is a citizen-science initiative, hoping to get more amateur naturalists and bird watchers to focus on fish and how they are changing (and of course, for us to tap into the knowledge which fishermen and fish scientists already have). We are currently assessing how much we know in this area, and how we can learn more (perhaps by bird watchers starting to catch&release fish, and photograph fish, from above and from below the water). We need to document, for example, the basics of fish in LIS, what we know and dont know,  and then go forward from there. We will try to learn this from every source possible, including fish experts and doing our own first-hand field research, with fishing rods, nets, cameras, etc.

  • Assess what is known and not known.
  • Try to work with experts to fill in a few gaps, to document what is known but not published.
  • Start with a TopTen approach, for fish, plankton, seabirds, etc.
  • Draft a web page for each of the TopTen fish in LIS, including what categories they fit into, what they eat, what preys on them, their life cycle, their seasonal cycle,  etc.

  • Gamefish and other medium sized fish.
