Our last organized pelagic trip of the 2018 year (Oct.7-8, 2018) got its target: 2 Great Skuas in mid-Gulf Of Maine

Regarding our Sept.29th trip, less than two weeks away...
I guess the best predictor for future trips is their predecessors, such as these HAS pelagic trips over the last five years, covering many of the same waters around Cape Cod and Stellwagen Bank...






Please take a look at these trip reports. 
It will give you an idea of what is possible, and how variable the birds can be from trip to trip.
Typically we see 3 or 4 shearwater species, some Wilson's StormPetrels, 1 or 2 species of jaegers, and a few other species of seabirds. 


The Oct.5-6 trip may or may (probably) not be run, depending upon demand and birds seen offshore in GOM waters this week AND the ferry service, which has not yet started for 2019!!  Will announce it here a week before that trip. Meanwhile, since it appears unlikely, do NOT make any travel plans for this trip yet!  As of 2019-09-23.



2019 June 16 pelagic trip from Harwich Port, MA on Cape Cod

June 16, 2019 from 8:10am to 4pm (local time, EDT).
SPECTACULAR TIGHT (2-mile?) CONCENTRATION OF FIFTY! WHALES AND HUNDREDS OF SEABIRDS FRENETICALLY FEEDING, ABOUT 18 MILES EAST OF MONOMOY, MA.  No rare seabirds, but all the regular June species were there.

Trip was organized by Krill Carson, for NECWA fund raising and scientific research. Naturalists included Wayne Petersen, David Clapp and yours-truly (TomR), plus NECWA staff of Michael O'Neill and Joan(?). We had a very successful marine trip out of Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich, MA, with 45 participants onboard the Yankee 2 deep sea fishing boat. Cloudy 60F, occasional light drizzle. SST water temperatures changed from 64F a few miles outside the dock, to 54F an hour later, down to 45F at 11:20am as we entered an area of high activity of whales and birds (most of that eastern patch of active water averaged around 49F sst sea surface temperature).  SW winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt. Seas 2 to 4 ft.

Our goals included seeing seabirds and whales, and learning more about the ocean. We did all that.  We ended up getting the two expected storm-petrels (see the Wilson's Storm-petrels on far left and far right side of this photo), the four expected shearwaters (see the Great Shearwater on the far right) and 4 Parasitic Jaegers, along with lots of Laughing and Herring Gulls and terns. We departed Harwich Port, MA at 8:10am EDT on June 16, 2019, returned to dock at 4pm (about 8 hours duration), covering 79miles round trip according to GSP tracking (using the trails.io app for iOS).  Click on the maps below to expand each, and then press ESC key to return...


Almost all whale and bird activity occurred at the far eastern end of this trip (the rightmost area of the blue line above). Almost no seabirds, and zero whales, were seen before 11:20am, when we entered this hot spot, a concentration of about 50 whales (40+ humpback, 3 fin, 7 minke, 30 white-sided dolphins in several pods) and hundreds of seabirds, all actively feeding, in the patch circled in red below...

. Manx Shearwater - 1. One or two were swimming on the water in a flock of Sooty Shearwaters and flushed as we entered this active area of water.

MAMMALS:
- Humpback Whale - 40+.
- Fin Whale - 3.
- Minke Whale - 7.
- White-sided Dolphin - 30 in several pods.

Some of these numbers are estimates and will be adjusted soon.

All the seabirds (shearwaters, storm petrels and jaegers) and most of the gulls and terns were concentrated in the region at the east end of our trip, about 18 miles due east of the center of the Monomoy NWR peninsula.


This photo was taken during the trip, of 7-inch-long Wilson's Storm-petrel. Note long feet extending beyond (squarish) tail. Several hundred were seen within binocular range, and photos revealed many beyond that range, spaced out over the distant water...


All photos are mine, unless otherwise noted, some frame-captured from 4K video, taken using Sony RX10.4 with Zeiss f4/600mm, and can be used by anyone (citation for T.Robben is optional). The image quality is not always the best, because of the extreme cropping/magnification needed for some distant birds.

THE MARINE FOOD WEB QUESTIONS:

So, what are these active whales and birds eating, in these concentrated patches of ocean?
How much of it is small fish, squid, amphipods, copepods, other zooplankton, phytoplankton, etc??
Are there enough plankton there to supply all these higher life forms? Will our plankton tow show it?
Or are they mostly eating small fish, maybe sand lance?
What does the marine food web look like in these active patches?
What is so special about these high-productivity patches?
And then the next level of questions:
How does this food web(s) change throughout the annual cycle, the four seasons?
Are these food webs changing longer term, over decades?  How?
Are micro-plastics and other pollutants working their way into this food web, and our food supply?

And perhaps the most interesting food web question:
Is climate or something else changing the PHYTOPLANKTON (which produce almost half of
the oxygen we breathe) in the seas! And the full future implications of that are unknown...
This is the underlying reason for our Gulls and Plankton Project!!

Our five-minute plankton tow (12:41-12:46pm) was conducted at 2 knots speed, in the middle of the active patch of water, and the results will be published here, in a month or two.


SKUAs in the GOM (2014 - 2018)

Here is a summary of our recent trips (since 2014) across the GOM Gulf Of Maine, and SKUA sightings:


On our regularly scheduled HAS GOM Gulf Of Maine field trips (between Portland ME and Yarmouth NS Canada) we have seen skuas on every trip which sailed. The ferry was the 500ft Nova Star in 2014 and 2015, and the 300ft new CAT in 2016-2018.

This trip has pros and cons. Here are two...
Pro: it is a long route (212 miles crossing each way), so there is plenty of opportunity to find birds in the exciting GOM.
Con: this is a public ship and it does not chase birds, so most of our skua photos had to be taken at very long distances.

Note that in 2016-2018 our Great Skuas photographed (between Sept.17 and Oct.8) all displayed molting in the primaries (obvious from the break in the white areas of the primaries), consistent with a bird breeding in the northern hemisphere, not with one breeding in the southern hemisphere and heading home/south in late Sept/Oct.  This is extra confirmation that these birds were Stercorarius skua, not a southern-breeding skua.

This 2014 trip was our first on this new NovaStar ship, which then had a two-year run on this route. We saw several skuas but our team got no usable photos. 2015 June 27-28 ECO : Everyone Cares about the Ocean
We saw one skua species, but no photos were captured by our team (Kevin Powers, Frank Mantlik, yours truly, Eric Mills, Les Kaufman, Dave Drapeau)....
This was a memorable trip, where the weather got quite rough on the June 28 return leg, as you can see from this photo, looking down from about 60 feet above the bounding main...
but the hardy seabirders (Eric Mills, Les Kaufman and Kevin Powers in red) continued to "rough it", mercilessly forcing themselves to eat the good food onboard the NovaStar... including the delicious blueberry cheesecake on my plate... while we exhausted ourselves strenuously bird-watching out the side windows at our breakfast table, where a South Polar Skua was spotted a few minutes later, as it fought the wind and rain...




I also took several GOM crossings in 1960-1970's but skuas were more difficult to find (not as regular).



On Nov.13th, 2018  I gave a presentation about Skuas (Stercorarius skua and five southern forms) and other marine matters. An updated version of that presentation will be posted here in several weeks. Thank you.

PHYTOPLANKTON:

Phytoplankton, also known as microalgae, are similar to terrestrial plants in that they contain chlorophyll and require sunlight in order to live and grow. Most phytoplankton are buoyant and float in the upper part of the ocean, where sunlight penetrates the water. Phytoplankton also require inorganic nutrients such as nitrates, phosphates, and sulfur which they convert into proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

The two main classes of phytoplankton are dinoflagellates and diatoms.

What are phytoplankton?  They are microscopic marine algae.


ALGAE:

Algae are simple plants that can range from the microscopic (microalgae), to large seaweeds (macroalgae), such as giant kelp more than one hundred feet in length. Microalgae include both cyanobacteria, (similar to bacteria, and formerly called “blue-green algae”) as well as green, brown and red algae. (There are more varieties of microalgae, but these are the main ones.)



Note that algae are polyphyletic….
Is it any wonder that people seem confused by what ALGAE are, what "algae" means?

Higher up the Antarctic food web... we need to detail how each skua form fits-in slightly differently, e.g., lonnbergi preys on penguins (eggs and chicks) more, maccormicki preys on fish more...






During the year many marine components and variables go through seasonal cycles, starting with sunlight angle & duration, wind, water currents, air temperature, sea temperature (SST sea surface temp and temperatures at lower depths), rain/snow, watershed runoff, DO dissolved oxygen, various virus and bacteria blooms, various phytoplankton blooms, various zooplankton blooms,  etc.  How do the northern and southern skuas fit into these cycles? Are they mostly coupled to the zooplankton blooms, through intermediary cycles of fish of several sizes?


QUESTIONS:
There are many interesting questions related to all this material.  Will list some of them here....


2018 Autumn Pelagic Trips

We are doing pelagic trips (of several different types) for the next FOUR WEEKENDS. See posts below...

Oct. 7-8.  <<click to view.  DONE.   Two-day trip from Portland ME to Yarmouth NS and back the next day. 420 miles. This trip replaced our 9/22-23 trip. This trip then got delayed by one day ship cancellation, to Oct. 7-8 (Sunday-Monday) due to weather on Saturday. This trip was completed on Oct. 7-8. We got our target bird, Great Skua.

SUMMARY:
Yes, we got Great Skuas again, several years in a row on this ferry route.
We had the satisfaction of digging-them-out under difficult circumstances.
List(s), photos, eBird links, and other details coming in next few days, etc.
Bad weather delayed our Sept.22-23 GOM skua trip to Oct.6-7 and more bad weather then delayed that weekend trip one more day, until Oct.7-8 Sunday-Monday, causing most of our birders to drop-out, but the smaller remaining team of 3 still had a successful trip, on the last ferry runs of 2018 on that route (and perhaps the last ferry runs on that long 212-mile route forever, since its US port will probably change in 2019 from Portland to BarHarbor).

Alex did a great job with 15-minute interval eBird recordings, such as the following three eBird checklists, which are the relevant ones for the three stercorarridae of interest (skuas #1, #2 and #3 below).

THREE SKUAS OF INTEREST:
We saw three possible skuas (most of their photos were taken at great distance, although each bird was initially seen closer to the ship with binoculars, before they flew away), the first one of which ("skua #1") was most likely a dark morph Pomarine Jaeger, POJA. Note that 100% certain ID is not common with many skuas in the field, for multiple reasons (including the remote possibility of Stercorarius antarcticus  eBird Checklist – Tucker's Town, Bermuda, BM – Sun Apr 27, 2003 ), but the ID of the following three birds is very probably correct.

The white pattern in upper primaries (in yellow circle) is more  dark-morph-Pomarine-like than skua-like.
Scroll way down to see several typical dark Pomarine Jaeger photos.
And the bird's entire dorsal surface in this photo is uniformly dark, almost black, a la Pom.
But note this similar-looking very dark skua from Sweden 2018 October 23, accepted as a Great Skua...

Note that our photos of these several October-molting skuas/jaegers strongly suggests the birds to be northern-hemisphere-breeding birds, because of molt timing, either Great Skuas or Pomarine Jaegers:

Any skua molting in October is very likely to be a Great Skua, an adult Great Skua just a few months off its Northern European breeding grounds.

Our actual 212-mile 6-hour route from Yarmouth, NS to Portland, ME on 2018-10-08...
Post script:  On Oct.16th the town of Bar Harbor ME voted in favor of the CAT ferry using its terminal, which will probably replace the Portland terminal next year, in 2019...

Bar Harbor council vote confirms what we pretty much knew: The Cat isn't coming back to Portland - Portland Press Herald.
It seems that next year this route will become BarHarbor to Yarmouth, and replace this much longer Portland to Yarmouth route!  In which case these were the last two days of this long route!! So the GOM crossing distance will get shorter, about two hours shorter, while the drive up to BarHarbor will get longer, at least 3 hours longer!

An analysis of the birds seen every fifteen minutes (about every ten miles) on both Oct.7 and 8 will be compiled and available here in another few weeks.


Not all Great Skua sightings have been reported to eBird over the decades. Here are some which have, including some of our successful skua trips which were reported by various members of our teams (some were not reported to eBird because we did not have good photos of the skuas seen)...

POMARINE JAEGERS - DARK MORPHS:

Regarding dark morph Pomarine Jaegers, they usually have a distinctive look, especially in the primaries upper surface, where the white lines all often seem separate and distinct, with little or no coalescing of the white. Will show a few photos of that here, but meanwhile google:  pomarine jaeger dark morph and go to Images.

Here is a photo I took off Monterey CA on Sept.11, 2014..... quite a different look than a large skua... especially compared with the primaries in the skua photo above...

Our Oct.6-7 trip just got postponed one day to Oct.7-8, Sunday-Monday.  This is the status, as of Oct.5, 2018  at 10am.

STATUS UPDATE as of Sept.21 at 1pm : This Sept.22-23 trip is being POSTPONED two weeks, since the ferry company cancelled all Saturday 9/22 trips due to high waves.
October 6-7 is the new/replacement date for this trip.
All the Sept.22-23 dates in this website will soon be replaced with Oct.6-7.

Our goal is to PHOTOGRAPH as many skuas along this long 420-mile round trip as possible (with the best possible photos), to increase our knowledge about those species in this GOM area (including locations, species, age, molt, behavior, etc.), and to SURVEY the locations and numbers of all seabirds and whatever other lifeforms we can see along this 210 mile transect.

The time and location of this trip is designed to target skuas, primarily Great Skuas. We get small numbers of several other seabirds, but this is mainly a skua trip, and a great excuse to haul a long route across the wide Gulf Of Maine, even in some wild weather (this is a large super stable ship and only the most extreme weather stops its runs).

In full disclosure, this is a public ferry ride across 210 miles (each way, on our round trip) of the GOM where skuas could be anywhere, and often are. The fun for this trip is trying to spot/ID/photograph them (and other good seabirds) as we pass through this long corridor, and scan hundreds of square miles of usually windy water. Its an acquired taste, and some people may not enjoy this form of birding. Fortunately some of the birds seem to parallel the ship fairly closely, and we benefit by that, but generally some birds are not that close to the ship, so seabird ID skills are at a premium (and so are BIF birds-in-flight photography skills, and this is a challenging environment to practice and sharpen those skills).

Last year on this trip we had (at least) 3 out of the following 5 species, as we crossed the Gulf Of Maine 212 miles each way (a few Antarctic/Brown Skuas have been recorded in the North Atlantic, but there is no way currently to ID that species confidently in the field, imho, without DNA analysis or the bird in the hand)...

Here is our target species, two Great Skuas (Stercorarius skua), photographed by Michael J. Good on Sept.12, 2015 in the Gulf of Maine. Note the left bird showing the dark cap, the protruding head and neck, the broad wings and bulky body, the short wide tail, the warm coloration, the large amount of white in the wing-flash, the molting wing, including perhaps a slightly short P10 growing in, plus a hint of the golden markings on the back of the right bird.... very similar to one of the skuas we saw in 2017 in mid-GOM...

Note the unusual timing of this 24-hour round trip:
-- We depart Portland ME in early afternoon 9/22, for a six-hour GOM crossing.
-- We sleep in a good hotel in Yarmouth overnight.
-- We depart Yarmouth NS in early morning 9/23 returning to Portland ME around 1pm.


Our trip, Portland - Yarmouth, is perhaps the longest ferry route in North America. Note how it dwarfs the arm of Cape Cod in the lower left, and how exposed it is to the open ocean, which is good for our trip, since Great Skuas are often far offshore, usually in the middle of this route, at the farthest offshore points ...


A basic question is what birds and other lifeforms are in these waters? And we are lucky that there is a long ferry route giving us access to these otherwise remote waters, so we can go out and see what is there.

Unusually high waves predicted in GOM for Sept.22, 2018 caused the ferry company to cancel all GOM trips that day...
